"The Wall": A Powerful Art Installation Commemorating the Chinese Exclusion Act Centennial

"The Wall": A powerful art installation by Yi Chen and Muchen commemorating 100 years since the introduction of the Chinese Exclusion Act, promoting understanding and unity.

We are thrilled to announce "The Wall," a remarkable public art installation brought to life by the visionary artists Yi Chen and Muchen in collaboration with the New Art Foundation of Vancouver. This extraordinary project serves as a poignant tribute, marking the 100th anniversary of the introduction of the Chinese Exclusion Act of 1923, while also striving to foster understanding, healing, and unity within our community.

Symbolizing the barriers once erected against the Chinese Canadian community, "The Wall" takes the form of an ice wall—a profound representation of the discriminatory obstacles of the past. As the ice melts, it becomes a powerful metaphor for a brighter future and the dismantling of those discriminatory barriers.

Yi Chen and Muchen, internationally acclaimed artists and life partners, have ingeniously crafted a visually stunning design that encapsulates the essence of unity and social change. We encourage attendees to engage with the transformative melting and to reflect on the importance of personal responsibility and active participation in driving societal transformation.

Yi Chen and Muchen's artistic prowess in spatial and installation art is renowned worldwide. Their innovative approach and shared vision in spatial and artistic design play a pivotal role in the creation of this impactful installation, which aims to stimulate dialogue and promote unity.

We are grateful for the support of FEIART group, the City of Burnaby and the Burnaby Village Museum in bringing this project to life. Together, we aim to recognize historic discrimination against individuals of Chinese Canadian descent in Burnaby and foster reconciliation with the Chinese Canadian community. Our primary objective is to acknowledge past injustices and cultivate a deeper understanding and healing within our community.

Through the collective efforts of artists Yi Chen and Muchen, NAFVan, and our dedicated supporters, we aspire to create a profoundly moving artistic tribute to the Chinese Canadian community while contributing to the development of a more inclusive and respectful society.

The Wall" project is scheduled to take place on July 1st, 2023, from 11:00 am to 4:30 pm at the Burnaby Village Museum.

We extend a heartfelt invitation to all attendees to join us on this significant occasion for reflection and dialogue as we recall the 100th anniversary of the introduction of the Chinese Exclusion Act of 1923 and work towards the realization of a more inclusive and respectful society.
